The Bates Method is an educational discipline which takes, as its basis, the work of W. H. Bates MD (1860 - 1931). Dr.Bates was an eminent New York ophthalmologist at the turn of the twentieth century.
He published his book 'The Cure of Imperfect Eyesight by Treatment without Glasses' in 1920 in which he explained his research, theories and practices. He also edited "Better Eyesight" magazines which ran from 1919-1930 which both he and Emily Lierman contributed to.

Mrs EMILY LIERMAN
Mrs Emily Lierman worked with Dr.Bates during his researches (many of the pictures in his book are of her) and later assisted him at the free Clinics in New York. Towards the end of his life Mrs. Lierman and Dr. Bates married.
